_
Sometimes called biaxial mat, double bias mat is an excellent structural reinforcement used in fibreglass laminates where strength is required in multiple directions.  The cloth is made from fibres oriented diagonally at +45° and -45° with a layer of chopped strand mat stitched to the back.  This gives strength from the double bias and the weight of the cloth with improved bonding from the chopped strand mat layer.
Features:
  • Creates a strong and structural laminate.
  • +45/-45 orientation double bias mat with 225gsm layer of chopped strand mat stitched on the back
  • The stitched layer improves, resin flow, bonding and adhesion to existing laminates
  • Compatible with polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy

Technical Snapshot:

  • Fibre orientation: +45° / –45°
  • Backing: 225 gsm chopped strand mat (stitched, not woven)
  • Weight: 400gsm / 600gsm/ 800gsm
  • Resin compatibility: Polyester, Vinyl Ester, Epoxy

Quick Tips:

  • Place this DBM chopped strand mat side down
  • Choose the right weight for the job you are doing:
    • 400/225gsm is suitable for general repairs, secondary laminates, and areas where moderate structural reinforcement is required without excessive thickness build.
      • Lighter and easier to wet out
      • Conforms well to curves and repairs
      • Lower resin demand
    • 600/225gsm is suitable for hull repairs, panel reinforcement, stringers, and general structural laminating
      • Good balance of strength, thickness, and workability
      • Common “go‑to” weight for structural work
    • 800/225gsm is suitable high‑load areas such as transoms, bulkheads, heavily stressed repairs, or where maximum strength is required
      • Heavy‑duty structural reinforcement
      • Rapid thickness and strength build
      • Higher resin usage and stiffer to handle

A few words on safety:

  • Not usually considered dangerous on its own.
